Our Story

Our Story

Striking Vikings was created with the support of the Downey community and Downey High School located in Downey, California on September of 2015. Within 3 months Striking Vikings grew into a team of 33 students and gained a second lead mentor from SpaceX after originally starting with only 15 students and 1 mentor. The team obtained 8 sponsors that collectively offered professional assistance and financial support of over $23,000. Striking Vikings was and still is readily recognized as a community effort as the team's finances are mostly backed by local organizations due to the large sponsor support that continues today. The team was able to establish themselves as a major STEAM and volunteer proponent in our community in their first 2015-2016 FRC season. The all-female middle school VEX Team 495 that the team mentored and helped start placed 3rd in their first regional competition. The Striking Vikings reached out to 10 elementary schools in Downey to inspire young students in STEAM by teaching them basic robotics and engineering skills. The team provided 3 multifaceted STEAM outreach programs in conjunction with Downey’s art center, Stay gallery, and science center, the Columbia Memorial Space Center while not neglecting the general public of Downey. The team was asked by Frank n’ Sons, a major collection hobby convention, and the Downey symphony to help with integrating STEAM into their own organizations with our team as their core representative due to the outreach’s success.
